Object Drawing Lessons

This lesson teaches a repeatable method for placing eyes, nose, and mouth on a simple cartoon face. It uses a defined convention: the face is a circle or oval; the vertical midline runs from top to bottom; the horizontal midline runs left to right; x-height means the distance from the baseline (bottom of the lower-case x) to the midline (top of the lower-case x). For feature placement, treat the horizontal midline as the eye line unless a task states otherwise. Letter styles vary, so the convention is a guide, not a universal rule. All measurements are simple and checkable. Use the same units throughout. The practice tasks are self-contained; where a diagram is needed, it is described in words. This is for cartoon faces only, not realistic faces or full figures.

Practice materials: Printable downloads are not available for this lesson yet. Use the instructions and four exercises below.

Set the face frame and reference lines

Start with a circle or oval for the head. Draw a vertical midline from the top to the bottom. Draw a horizontal midline from the left edge to the right edge. These two lines cross at the face center. Mark the top, bottom, left, and right edges. For a circle, the horizontal midline is the eye line by convention. For an oval taller than wide, keep the eye line at the horizontal midline unless the task says otherwise. Label the baseline as the bottom edge of the face and the midline as the horizontal center line. X-height is baseline to midline; use it only when a task refers to letter-height spacing.

Keep lines light so you can adjust them. Measure the face width and height with a ruler if needed. Record the units, such as centimeters or grid squares. Do not mix units. If the face is 10 cm wide and 12 cm tall, the horizontal midline is at 6 cm from the top. The vertical midline is at 5 cm from the left. These numbers are hypothetical examples; measure your own drawing.

  1. Draw a circle or oval for the head.
  2. Draw a vertical midline from top to bottom.
  3. Draw a horizontal midline from left to right.
  4. Mark the top, bottom, left, and right edges.
  5. Label the horizontal midline as the eye line for this convention.

Place the eyes on the eye line

Place two eye marks on the horizontal midline. A simple convention is to divide the face width into four equal parts along the eye line. Put the left eye center at the first quarter mark and the right eye center at the third quarter mark. For a 10 cm wide face, the quarter marks are at 2.5 cm and 7.5 cm from the left edge. The space between the eyes is then 5 cm, and each eye is 2.5 cm from the nearest side edge. These are hypothetical examples; use your measured width.

Eye size can vary. A common cartoon choice is an eye width of about one quarter of the face width, but keep the centers on the quarter marks. Draw simple circles or ovals. Check that the two eye centers are level and equally spaced from the vertical midline. If the face is an oval, the eye line stays at the horizontal midline, but the side margins may look different; measure from the actual edges.

  1. Measure the face width along the eye line.
  2. Divide the width into four equal parts.
  3. Mark the first and third quarter points as eye centers.
  4. Draw each eye centered on its mark.
  5. Check that both eye centers sit on the horizontal midline.

Place the nose and mouth below the eye line

Place the nose on the vertical midline, below the eye line. A simple convention is to put the nose tip halfway between the eye line and the bottom edge of the face. If the eye line is at 6 cm from the top and the bottom edge is at 12 cm, the halfway point is 9 cm from the top. That is 3 cm below the eye line and 3 cm above the bottom edge. These numbers are hypothetical; measure your own face.

Place the mouth on the vertical midline, below the nose tip. A simple convention is to put the mouth line halfway between the nose tip and the bottom edge. Using the same example, the mouth line is at 10.5 cm from the top, which is 1.5 cm below the nose tip and 1.5 cm above the bottom edge. Keep the mouth centered on the vertical midline. The mouth width can be about one third of the face width, centered on the midline. Check that the nose and mouth are centered and that the mouth is below the nose.

  1. Find the midpoint between the eye line and the bottom edge; mark the nose tip there on the vertical midline.
  2. Find the midpoint between the nose tip and the bottom edge; mark the mouth line there on the vertical midline.
  3. Draw the nose centered on the vertical midline at the nose tip mark.
  4. Draw the mouth centered on the vertical midline at the mouth line mark.
  5. Check that the nose is above the mouth and both are centered.

Check proportions and adjust

Use simple arithmetic to check placement. For a face 10 cm wide and 12 cm tall with the eye line at 6 cm from the top: eye centers at 2.5 cm and 7.5 cm from the left; nose tip at 9 cm from the top; mouth line at 10.5 cm from the top. Check that the eye centers are 5 cm apart and each is 2.5 cm from the nearest side edge. Check that the nose tip is 3 cm below the eye line and 3 cm above the bottom edge. Check that the mouth line is 1.5 cm below the nose tip and 1.5 cm above the bottom edge. These values are hypothetical examples; substitute your measured numbers.

Valid alternatives are allowed. You may move the eye line slightly up or down, widen or narrow the eye spacing, or change the nose and mouth heights, as long as you state the convention you used and the result is checkable. The rubric rewards consistent, measurable placement, not a single universal answer. Keep units consistent and record your measurements so another person can verify them.

  1. Record face width and height in one unit.
  2. Record eye line height from the top.
  3. Calculate quarter marks for eye centers.
  4. Calculate nose tip and mouth line midpoints.
  5. Compare your drawing to the calculated marks and adjust.

Worked example

A cartoon face is a circle 8 cm wide and 8 cm tall. The horizontal midline is the eye line. Place the eye centers at the quarter marks, the nose tip halfway between the eye line and the bottom edge, and the mouth line halfway between the nose tip and the bottom edge. Give all positions in centimeters from the left edge or top edge.

Worked answer

Face width 8 cm, height 8 cm. Eye line is at 4 cm from the top. Quarter marks are at 2 cm and 6 cm from the left edge, so eye centers are at 2 cm and 6 cm. The nose tip is halfway between 4 cm and 8 cm from the top, so it is at 6 cm from the top on the vertical midline (4 cm from the left edge). The mouth line is halfway between 6 cm and 8 cm from the top, so it is at 7 cm from the top on the vertical midline. Check: eye centers are 4 cm apart and each is 2 cm from the nearest side edge; nose tip is 2 cm below the eye line and 2 cm above the bottom edge; mouth line is 1 cm below the nose tip and 1 cm above the bottom edge.

Four practice exercises

Exercise 1

A cartoon face is an oval 12 cm wide and 16 cm tall. Use the horizontal midline as the eye line. Place eye centers at the quarter marks of the width. Place the nose tip halfway between the eye line and the bottom edge. Place the mouth line halfway between the nose tip and the bottom edge. Give positions in centimeters from the left edge or top edge.

Show answer and check

Eye line is at 8 cm from the top. Quarter marks are at 3 cm and 9 cm from the left edge, so eye centers are at 3 cm and 9 cm. Nose tip is halfway between 8 cm and 16 cm from the top, so it is at 12 cm from the top on the vertical midline (6 cm from the left edge). Mouth line is halfway between 12 cm and 16 cm from the top, so it is at 14 cm from the top on the vertical midline. Check: eye centers are 6 cm apart and each is 3 cm from the nearest side edge; nose tip is 4 cm below the eye line and 4 cm above the bottom edge; mouth line is 2 cm below the nose tip and 2 cm above the bottom edge.

Why: The horizontal midline of a 16 cm tall oval is at 8 cm. Quarter marks of a 12 cm width are 3 cm and 9 cm. The nose tip midpoint between 8 cm and 16 cm is 12 cm. The mouth line midpoint between 12 cm and 16 cm is 14 cm. All positions are on the vertical midline except the eye centers.

Check: Measure the face width and height. Confirm the eye line is at half the height. Confirm eye centers are at one quarter and three quarters of the width. Confirm nose tip is halfway between eye line and bottom. Confirm mouth line is halfway between nose tip and bottom. Use the same unit throughout.

Exercise 2

A cartoon face is a circle 10 cm wide and 10 cm tall. The eye line is chosen at 4 cm from the top instead of the horizontal midline. Place eye centers at the quarter marks of the width. Place the nose tip halfway between the eye line and the bottom edge. Place the mouth line halfway between the nose tip and the bottom edge. Give positions in centimeters from the left edge or top edge.

Show answer and check

Eye line is at 4 cm from the top. Quarter marks are at 2.5 cm and 7.5 cm from the left edge, so eye centers are at 2.5 cm and 7.5 cm. Nose tip is halfway between 4 cm and 10 cm from the top, so it is at 7 cm from the top on the vertical midline (5 cm from the left edge). Mouth line is halfway between 7 cm and 10 cm from the top, so it is at 8.5 cm from the top on the vertical midline. Check: eye centers are 5 cm apart and each is 2.5 cm from the nearest side edge; nose tip is 3 cm below the eye line and 3 cm above the bottom edge; mouth line is 1.5 cm below the nose tip and 1.5 cm above the bottom edge.

Why: The chosen eye line is 4 cm, not the horizontal midline at 5 cm. Quarter marks of a 10 cm width are 2.5 cm and 7.5 cm. The nose tip midpoint between 4 cm and 10 cm is 7 cm. The mouth line midpoint between 7 cm and 10 cm is 8.5 cm. The alternative eye line is stated and checked.

Check: Confirm the stated eye line height is used consistently. Measure eye centers from the left edge and check they are at quarter marks. Check nose tip and mouth line midpoints from the top. Verify the order: eye line, nose tip, mouth line, bottom edge.

Exercise 3

A cartoon face is a circle 9 cm wide and 9 cm tall. Use the horizontal midline as the eye line. Place eye centers at the quarter marks. Place the nose tip at 6 cm from the top on the vertical midline. Place the mouth line at 7.5 cm from the top on the vertical midline. Check whether the nose tip and mouth line follow the halfway conventions. Give positions in centimeters from the left edge or top edge.

Show answer and check

Eye line is at 4.5 cm from the top. Quarter marks are at 2.25 cm and 6.75 cm from the left edge, so eye centers are at 2.25 cm and 6.75 cm. The nose tip at 6 cm from the top is not halfway between 4.5 cm and 9 cm; the halfway point is 6.75 cm. The mouth line at 7.5 cm from the top is not halfway between the given nose tip at 6 cm and 9 cm; that halfway point is 7.5 cm, so the mouth line does match the halfway convention relative to the given nose tip. Check: eye centers are 4.5 cm apart and each is 2.25 cm from the nearest side edge; the nose tip is 1.5 cm below the eye line and 3 cm above the bottom edge, so it does not follow the halfway convention; the mouth line is 1.5 cm below the nose tip and 1.5 cm above the bottom edge, so it does follow the halfway convention relative to the given nose tip.

Why: The horizontal midline of a 9 cm tall circle is at 4.5 cm. Quarter marks of a 9 cm width are 2.25 cm and 6.75 cm. The halfway point between the eye line at 4.5 cm and the bottom at 9 cm is 6.75 cm, so the given nose tip at 6 cm is not halfway. The halfway point between the given nose tip at 6 cm and the bottom at 9 cm is 7.5 cm, so the given mouth line does follow that convention.

Check: Calculate the eye line as half the height. Calculate quarter marks for eye centers. Calculate the halfway point between eye line and bottom and compare with the given nose tip. Calculate the halfway point between the given nose tip and bottom and compare with the given mouth line. Use consistent units.

Exercise 4

A cartoon face is an oval 14 cm wide and 18 cm tall. Use the horizontal midline as the eye line. Place eye centers at the quarter marks. Place the nose tip halfway between the eye line and the bottom edge. Place the mouth line halfway between the nose tip and the bottom edge. Then move the mouth line 1 cm lower and state the new position. Give positions in centimeters from the left edge or top edge.

Show answer and check

Eye line is at 9 cm from the top. Quarter marks are at 3.5 cm and 10.5 cm from the left edge, so eye centers are at 3.5 cm and 10.5 cm. Nose tip is halfway between 9 cm and 18 cm from the top, so it is at 13.5 cm from the top on the vertical midline (7 cm from the left edge). Mouth line is halfway between 13.5 cm and 18 cm from the top, so it is at 15.75 cm from the top. Moving the mouth line 1 cm lower gives 16.75 cm from the top on the vertical midline. Check: eye centers are 7 cm apart and each is 3.5 cm from the nearest side edge; nose tip is 4.5 cm below the eye line and 4.5 cm above the bottom edge; the original mouth line is 2.25 cm below the nose tip and 2.25 cm above the bottom edge; the moved mouth line is 3.25 cm below the nose tip and 1.25 cm above the bottom edge.

Why: The horizontal midline of an 18 cm tall oval is at 9 cm. Quarter marks of a 14 cm width are 3.5 cm and 10.5 cm. The nose tip midpoint between 9 cm and 18 cm is 13.5 cm. The mouth line midpoint between 13.5 cm and 18 cm is 15.75 cm. Adding 1 cm gives 16.75 cm. The moved mouth line is still on the vertical midline and below the nose tip.

Check: Confirm the eye line is half the height. Confirm eye centers are at quarter marks. Confirm nose tip and original mouth line midpoints. Add 1 cm to the mouth line and confirm the new value is below the nose tip and above the bottom edge. Use the same unit throughout.

Questions and answers

Do I have to use the horizontal midline as the eye line?

No. It is the default convention for this lesson. You may choose another eye line height if you state it and check it with measurements.

How wide should the mouth be?

A simple starting choice is about one third of the face width, centered on the vertical midline. Adjust as needed and record the width you used.

What does x-height mean here?

X-height is the distance from the baseline to the midline, using the lower-case x as a reference. In this lesson, use it only when a task mentions letter-height spacing; feature placement uses the face frame lines.

Can I draw oval eyes instead of circles?

Yes. Keep the eye centers on the chosen eye line and check that the centers are level and evenly spaced from the vertical midline.

Are the numerical examples required values?

No. They are hypothetical examples. Measure your own face and use consistent units.
