Object Drawing Lessons

This guide teaches a stylized anime eye using three basic shapes: a curved lash line, a circular iris, and a small highlight. The convention is simple: the eye sits between a baseline and a midline, and the iris is a circle that can be partly covered by the upper lash line. Letter styles and eye shapes vary, so treat every measurement as a starting point you can adjust. Use a pencil and paper, and keep your lines light until the final pass. The goal is a clean, readable eye, not realistic anatomy.

Practice materials: Printable downloads are not available for this lesson yet. Use the instructions and four exercises below.

Set the eye box and lash line

Draw a light horizontal baseline and a parallel midline above it. The space between them is the eye box. A common starting height is about 3 cm, but measure your own paper and choose a comfortable size. Mark the left and right ends of the eye on the baseline.

The upper lash line is a curved stroke that starts near the left corner, rises over the eye, and thickens toward the outer corner. Keep the curve smooth and avoid making it perfectly symmetrical; a slight tilt gives the eye character. The lower lid is a thinner, flatter curve that does not close the eye completely.

  1. Draw a baseline and a midline about 3 cm apart (hypothetical example; adjust to your paper).
  2. Mark two points on the baseline for the eye corners, about 5 cm apart.
  3. Draw the upper lash line as a single curved stroke from the inner corner to the outer corner.
  4. Add a thinner lower lid curve that leaves a small gap at the outer corner.

Place the iris and pupil

The iris is a circle centered inside the eye box. It can touch the upper lash line and leave a small gap above the lower lid. Draw the circle lightly first, then darken only the part you keep. The pupil is a smaller circle or oval inside the iris, centered or slightly offset toward the inner corner.

Keep the iris circle simple. Avoid adding many rings or spokes; this guide focuses on shape, not colored-pencil rendering. If the iris looks too large, reduce it by about one-fifth and check that the white space on each side is balanced.

  1. Find the center of the eye box and draw a light circle for the iris.
  2. Check that the iris touches or nearly touches the upper lash line.
  3. Draw a smaller pupil inside the iris, leaving a ring of iris visible.
  4. Erase any guide lines that cross the final shapes.

Add the highlight and finish the lashes

Place one main highlight as a small circle or oval near the upper-left or upper-right of the iris. A second tiny highlight opposite the main one adds sparkle but is optional. Keep highlights as clean white space or light pencil marks; do not outline them heavily.

Thicken the outer half of the upper lash line and add two or three short lash strokes at the outer corner. These strokes should follow the curve of the lash line, not stick out at random angles. Finally, darken the pupil and the upper lash line, and leave the lower lid light.

  1. Draw a small highlight circle in the upper part of the iris.
  2. Add an optional tiny second highlight on the opposite side.
  3. Thicken the outer half of the upper lash line.
  4. Add two or three short lash strokes at the outer corner, following the curve.

Worked example

Draw one anime eye in a 5 cm wide by 3 cm tall eye box. Use a curved upper lash line, a circular iris about 2 cm tall, a pupil about 1 cm tall, and one small highlight in the upper-left iris. Add two lash strokes at the outer corner.

Worked answer

The finished eye has a smooth upper lash line that thickens toward the outer corner, a lower lid that leaves a gap, an iris circle that touches the upper lash line, a centered pupil, and a small highlight in the upper-left iris. Two short lashes follow the outer curve. The lower lid remains light.

Four practice exercises

Exercise 1

Draw an anime eye in a 4 cm wide by 2.5 cm tall eye box. Use a curved upper lash line and a thin lower lid. Draw a circular iris 1.5 cm tall that touches the upper lash line, and a centered pupil 0.8 cm tall inside it. Place one highlight in the upper-right iris. Add no outer-corner lash strokes beyond the main lash line.

Show answer and check

A clean eye with a curved upper lash line, a lower lid gap, an iris circle touching the upper lash line, a centered pupil, and a small upper-right highlight. No outer-corner lash strokes are added.

Why: The iris is 1.5 cm in a 2.5 cm box, leaving about 1 cm of vertical space. The pupil is about half the iris height, so the iris ring remains visible. The highlight is placed away from the pupil center.

Check: Measure the iris height against the eye box height. Confirm the pupil is smaller than the iris and the highlight does not overlap the pupil center. Check that no lash strokes were added.

Exercise 2

Draw an anime eye with a tilted upper lash line that thickens toward the outer corner. The eye box is 6 cm wide and 3 cm tall. The iris is 2 cm tall and shifted slightly toward the inner corner, with a centered pupil inside it. Add one main highlight and one tiny second highlight on opposite sides of the iris.

Show answer and check

A tilted eye with a thicker outer lash line, an iris shifted inward, a centered pupil inside the iris, and two highlights on opposite sides of the iris.

Why: Shifting the iris inward changes the white space balance but keeps the iris touching the upper lash line. The second highlight is tiny so it does not compete with the main highlight.

Check: Check that the iris still touches the upper lash line after shifting. Confirm the main highlight is larger than the second. Verify the tilt is visible in the lash line, not in the iris shape.

Exercise 3

Draw an anime eye in a 5 cm wide by 3 cm tall box. Use a narrow iris 1.8 cm tall with a centered pupil 0.9 cm tall inside it. Place the main highlight in the upper-left iris and add three lash strokes at the outer corner.

Show answer and check

A narrow iris eye with an upper-left highlight, a centered pupil, and three short lashes following the outer curve.

Why: An upper-left highlight follows the guide's placement convention and stays on the iris without covering the pupil. Three lashes are within the recommended limit and must follow the lash line curve.

Check: Confirm the highlight is on the iris and not on the pupil. Count the lash strokes and check their direction against the lash line. Measure the iris and pupil heights to confirm the ratio.

Exercise 4

Draw two anime eye variants side by side in separate 4 cm by 2.5 cm boxes. Variant A has a round iris with a smaller centered pupil and one highlight. Variant B has a slightly oval iris with a smaller centered pupil and two highlights. Both use the same lash line curve.

Show answer and check

Two eyes with the same lash line but different iris shapes and highlight counts. Variant A has a round iris and one highlight; Variant B has an oval iris and two highlights.

Why: Keeping the lash line the same isolates the iris and highlight changes. The oval iris is a valid stylized choice as long as it remains simple and the pupil stays inside.

Check: Compare the two lash lines to confirm they match. Check that each iris contains a smaller pupil and that highlights do not cover the pupil center. Verify the boxes are the same size.

Questions and answers

Do I need to draw a full face first?

No. This guide focuses on a single eye. You can practice the eye alone and place it on a face later.

How big should the iris be?

A practical starting point is an iris about two-thirds the height of the eye box. Adjust until the white space on each side looks balanced.

Can I use a different eye shape?

Yes. The same steps work for round, narrow, or tilted eyes. Change the lash line curve and the iris position, but keep the highlight and pupil relationships.

What if my lines look messy?

Draw lightly first, then darken only the final lines. Erase guides after the iris and highlight are placed.
