Object Drawing Lessons

A Christmas wreath is a ring of foliage with a bow and berry accents. This guide builds it from a measured circle, adds overlapping leaf loops, places a bow at the top center, and clusters berries in threes. You will use a simple convention: x-height is the distance from baseline to midline, and letter styles vary, so any consistent handwriting is acceptable. All measurements are hypothetical examples; measure your own paper and tools before drawing.

Draw a Christmas Wreath: Loops, Bow and Berry Clusters

Use the stated measurements and conventions for each exercise.

Set the ring and guide marks

Start with a light circle for the wreath's outer edge and a smaller concentric circle for the inner opening. A hypothetical example is an outer diameter of 18 cm and an inner diameter of 10 cm on A4 paper, leaving a 4 cm band for foliage. Mark the top center, bottom center, and left and right midpoints. These four marks anchor the bow and the main foliage loops.

Keep construction lines faint so they can be erased or hidden under leaves. The ring should look balanced before any decoration is added.

  1. Draw a faint vertical and horizontal cross through the paper center.
  2. Set a compass or trace a round object to make the outer circle.
  3. Draw the inner circle concentrically, leaving an even band.
  4. Mark top, bottom, left and right on the outer circle.

Build overlapping foliage loops

Foliage loops are leaf shapes that follow the ring and overlap like shingles. Work in one direction around the circle, drawing each leaf from the outer edge toward the inner edge. Vary leaf length slightly so the wreath looks natural, but keep the overall band width consistent. A hypothetical leaf length is 3 cm, with each leaf overlapping the previous one by about one third.

Use a simple leaf convention: a central vein line and two curved side edges. You may draw pointed or rounded leaves as long as the overlap direction stays consistent.

  1. Begin at the top center and draw a leaf angled slightly clockwise.
  2. Add the next leaf overlapping the first by one third.
  3. Continue around the ring, keeping leaf tips near the outer circle.
  4. Fill the inner band with a second row of shorter leaves pointing inward.

Place the bow and berry clusters

The bow sits at the top center, covering the starting point of the foliage. Draw two loops and two tails. A hypothetical bow width is 6 cm, with loops about 2.5 cm wide and tails 4 cm long. The bow should overlap the leaves, not sit behind them.

Berry clusters are small circles grouped in threes. Place one cluster at the bottom center and two clusters at the left and right midpoints, slightly inside the foliage band. A hypothetical berry diameter is 0.8 cm. Keep clusters away from the bow so the top center stays readable.

  1. Draw the bow's center knot at the top center mark.
  2. Add two loops symmetrically and two tails angling downward.
  3. Draw three small circles at the bottom center, touching or slightly overlapping.
  4. Repeat berry clusters at left and right midpoints.
  5. Erase construction lines that remain visible outside the wreath.

Worked example

A wreath has an outer diameter of 16 cm and an inner diameter of 8 cm. What is the width of the foliage band, and how many 2 cm berry clusters fit along the bottom quarter of the outer circle if each cluster needs 2 cm of space? Use pi as 3.14.

Worked answer

Band width is 4 cm. The outer circumference is about 50.24 cm; one quarter is about 12.56 cm, so 6 clusters of 2 cm fit with 0.56 cm left over.

Why: Band width is half the difference of diameters: (16 - 8) / 2 = 4 cm. Outer circumference is 16 x 3.14 = 50.24 cm. A quarter is 50.24 / 4 = 12.56 cm. Dividing by 2 cm per cluster gives 6 full clusters and a remainder of 0.56 cm.

Check: Recheck by multiplying 6 clusters by 2 cm to get 12 cm, then adding 0.56 cm to reach 12.56 cm. Confirm the band width by measuring from inner to outer circle at two opposite points.

Four practice exercises

Exercise 1

A wreath ring has an outer diameter of 20 cm and an inner diameter of 12 cm. Calculate the foliage band width. Then state how many 1.5 cm berry clusters fit along the bottom quarter of the outer circle, using pi as 3.14.

Show answer and check

Band width is 4 cm. The outer circumference is 62.8 cm; one quarter is 15.7 cm, so 10 clusters of 1.5 cm fit with 0.7 cm left over.

Why: Band width = (20 - 12) / 2 = 4 cm. Circumference = 20 x 3.14 = 62.8 cm. Quarter = 15.7 cm. 15.7 / 1.5 = 10 full clusters with remainder 0.7 cm.

Check: Multiply 10 by 1.5 to get 15 cm, add 0.7 cm to reach 15.7 cm. Measure the band at two opposite points to confirm 4 cm.

Exercise 2

You are drawing a wreath with 18 outer leaves. Each leaf overlaps the previous one by one third of its length. If each leaf is 3 cm long, what is the total length of the leaf row before overlap is removed? Describe how you would check the overlap visually.

Show answer and check

The row length before overlap is 54 cm. Visually check that each leaf covers about 1 cm of the previous leaf and that the tips follow the outer circle.

Why: 18 leaves x 3 cm = 54 cm total leaf length. One third of 3 cm is 1 cm, so each leaf hides 1 cm of the previous leaf. The visible advance per leaf is 2 cm.

Check: Count the visible leaf tips around the ring and confirm each tip is about 2 cm from the previous tip along the circle. Measure one overlap to confirm it is about 1 cm.

Exercise 3

A bow has two loops each 2.5 cm wide and two tails each 4 cm long. The bow is centered at the top of a wreath with an outer diameter of 18 cm. What is the total width of the bow if the loops sit side by side, and how much space remains on each side of the bow along the top half of the outer circle? Use pi as 3.14.

Show answer and check

The bow width is 5 cm. The top half of the outer circle is about 28.26 cm, so about 11.63 cm remains on each side.

Why: Two loops of 2.5 cm side by side give 5 cm. Outer circumference = 18 x 3.14 = 56.52 cm. Half = 28.26 cm. Subtract bow width: 28.26 - 5 = 23.26 cm. Divide by 2 sides: 11.63 cm per side.

Check: Add 11.63 + 5 + 11.63 to get 28.26 cm. Confirm the bow width by measuring the two loops together.

Exercise 4

You plan three berry clusters of three berries each. Each berry is 0.8 cm in diameter and berries in a cluster touch. What is the total width of one cluster if the three berries sit in a row? If the clusters are spaced evenly along the bottom quarter of a 24 cm outer-diameter wreath, what is the gap between clusters? Use pi as 3.14.

Show answer and check

One cluster is 2.4 cm wide. The bottom quarter is about 18.84 cm; three clusters take 7.2 cm, leaving 11.64 cm for two gaps, so each gap is 5.82 cm.

Why: Three berries of 0.8 cm in a row give 2.4 cm. Circumference = 24 x 3.14 = 75.36 cm. Quarter = 18.84 cm. Three clusters = 3 x 2.4 = 7.2 cm. Remaining = 18.84 - 7.2 = 11.64 cm. Two gaps = 11.64 / 2 = 5.82 cm.

Check: Add 2.4 + 5.82 + 2.4 + 5.82 + 2.4 to get 18.84 cm. Measure one cluster to confirm 2.4 cm and check that berries touch.

Questions and answers

Do I need a compass?

No. You can trace a round plate or cup for the outer circle and a smaller one for the inner circle, as long as both share the same center mark.

How many leaves should the wreath have?

There is no fixed number. Cover the band with overlapping leaves in one direction, then add a shorter inner row. A hypothetical count is 24 outer leaves and 16 inner leaves, but adjust to your ring size.

Can I use rounded leaves instead of pointed ones?

Yes. The convention allows any consistent leaf style. Keep the central vein and overlap direction so the wreath reads as foliage.

Where should the bow go if my wreath is not centered on the page?

Place the bow at the top center of the wreath ring, not the page. Mark the ring's top point first, then draw the bow there.
